In the hot summer swelter, many theater fans stay cool (and rock out poolside) with the help of their favorite summer show tune. Last week, Broadway.com asked readers which summer-themed Broadway song is their favorite. The fans have spoken, and the results vary from Grease’s high volume recount of summer love to Spring Awakening’s melodic musings on maturity. Check out the full results below!
1. “Summer Nights,” Grease - 26%
Tell me more, Tell me more! Grease follows the unlikely love story of Danny and Sandy, a greaser and a good girl who fall in love one summer and reconnect unexpectedly once school is back in session. In the iconic number “Summer Nights,” Danny and Sandy recount their summer courtship to their respective group of friends. Over the years this he said/she said song has become a sing-along favorite at screenings of the musical's popular film adaptation.
2. “The Song of Purple Summer,” Spring Awakening - 23%
After a wild, jam-packed two hours of rock jams, Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening concludes its story with the calming and soulful tune “Song of Purple Summer.” Lauren Pritchard tackled the tune as part of the show's original Broadway cast.
3. “Summertime,” Porgy and Bess - 16%
The Gershwin classic is one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music, easily transitioning from opera to jazz to musical theater and many other genres. Artists ranging from Billie Holiday to Sublime have covered this summer lullaby. Tony winner Audra McDonald and Nikki Renee Daniels can be seen delivering wonderful renditions of the tune in Porgy and Bess' current Tony-winning revival!
